How to balance work and exam revision

How to balance work and exam revision

 8 Apr 2024

Our lives are usually busy enough without throwing exam revision into the mix. This blog will give you some tips and tools to help you manage your time effectively, ensuring that you deliver at work while giving yourself the best chance to cover off the revision you’ll need to do before exam day.

Set Clear Goals

Identify your most important work tasks and revise your exam schedule accordingly. Determine which subjects or topics require more attention and allocate dedicated time slots for revision. By having a clear idea of your priorities, you can create a structured plan that allows for the most effective use of your time.

Timing is everything

Identify time slots during the day when you are most alert and focused, and allocate those periods for revision. Early mornings or late evenings can often provide a quiet and distraction-free environment for studying. Consider negotiating flexible work hours with your employer, if possible, to create a schedule that accommodates your revision needs.

Routine

Establishing a study routine can significantly enhance your productivity and help maintain a work-study balance. Dedicate specific blocks of time to revision and stick to them consistently. Breaking your study sessions into smaller, manageable chunks with regular breaks can improve focus and prevent burnout. Experiment with different study techniques to find what works best for you.

Communication

Communication with your employer is vital when juggling work and exam revision. Discuss your exam commitments and potential adjustments to your workload or deadlines. Employers understand the importance of professional qualifications  and will probably be willing to offer support or flexibility during this period.

Look after yourself

Maintaining a healthy work-study balance also requires looking after yourself. Get sufficient sleep, eat well, and try to fit in a few breaks for a walk, run, some yoga, whatever allows you to switch off even if only for half an hour.  Taking breaks can help reduce stress levels and prevent burnout. Remember, a well-rested and rejuvenated mind is more productive and better equipped to handle both work and exam preparation.

The best of luck and here’s looking forward to a revision free summer!
